Maneki Neko Lab (招き猫研究所) is a Japan-based media dedicated to the maneki neko, the Japanese beckoning cat. We cover where it came from, what its raised paw and colors are said to mean, and the regions and people who make it, after checking each point against its source. The site is operated by Japan ManekiNeko Research Institute, Inc.

Editorial policy
We write from sources we have checked
Our articles are based on dictionaries, public institutions, temples and shrines, and kilns, and we name those sources in each article. Many of them are in Japanese; when we quote or summarize a Japanese source, we translate it ourselves and keep the original title so you can look it up.
Legend and documented fact are kept apart
Much of what is said about the maneki neko comes from temple legends and folk belief. We present those as stories that have been passed down, and we separate them from what can be confirmed in records.
“Maneki Neko Lab’s definition” is labeled as ours
Some standards on this site, such as the meanings we assign to each color, were set by Maneki Neko Lab. We label them “Maneki Neko Lab’s definition” so they are not confused with explanations from kilns, temples or other organizations.
We correct errors and note the date
If you point out an error, we check it against the source. If it is wrong, we correct the article and note what we changed and when. Please contact us by email.
Our own brand
The maneki neko brand “Luxen Maneki” that appears in some articles is operated by the same company, Japan ManekiNeko Research Institute, Inc. In articles we label it “Made by Maneki Neko Lab” so it is clear that it is our own product.
